How the High School GPA Calculator works

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale most US high schools use. Each class is weighted by its credit value and the calculator divides the total weighted points by the sum of credits.

For weighted GPAs (honors and AP), click Grade Scale and increase the GPA value for those letters — for example, AP A becomes 5.0 instead of 4.0.

Formula

GPA = Σ(gpa × credits) / Σ(credits)

Where

gpa
value for each letter (4.0 unweighted, higher for honors/AP)
credits
credit value per class (typically 1)
Σ
sum across all classes entered

FAQ

Common questions

Unweighted vs weighted GPA — what's the difference?
Unweighted treats every A as 4.0 regardless of class difficulty. Weighted bumps honors and AP classes higher (often A = 4.5 honors / 5.0 AP). Use Grade Scale to set your school's weighting.
Should I use 1 credit per class?
For most high schools, yes — each semester-long class counts once. If your school uses different credit values per class, use those.
How does my high school GPA affect college admissions?
Colleges look at both unweighted (true comparison across applicants) and weighted (rewards course rigor). Many schools recalculate using their own scale anyway. Calculate both if you can.
My school uses a 5.0 or 100-point scale. Can I use this?
Yes — customize the Grade Scale to match. Set max GPA values higher (e.g. AP A = 5.0) and adjust each letter accordingly.
Does GPA include electives, PE, and art?
Usually yes — most high schools include all credit-bearing courses in GPA. Check your school's handbook if unsure.
