Grade Needed

Quick start

How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter your current grade

Type the percentage you currently have in the class (whatever your gradebook shows).

  2. 2

    Set your desired grade

The overall grade you're aiming for. Enter a percent like 90, or type a letter like B+ and the calculator uses your scale's threshold.

  3. 3

    Enter the final's weight

How much the final counts toward your overall grade. If the syllabus says 30%, enter 30.

  4. 4

    Read what you need

The calculator shows the score you'd need on the final, plus a table of what every letter grade would take. It flags goals already secured or out of reach.

How the Final Grade Calculator works

The Final Grade Calculator solves for the score you need on a final to push your overall grade to a target. It accounts for how much weight the final carries vs. work you’ve already completed.

If the answer is above 100%, it’s flagged as not achievable, since you’d need extra credit. If below 0%, your current grade is already above your target.

Formula

needed = (desired − (1 − weight) × current) / weight

desired

current
your current grade in the class
weight
how much the final counts (as a decimal: 30% = 0.30)

FAQ

Common questions

Where do I find my current grade?
Your class's grade portal, online gradebook, syllabus tracker, or wherever your instructor updates grades. If nothing's tracked, compute it yourself using the Grade Calculator from your assignments.
What does “final weight” mean?
The percentage of your overall course grade that comes from the final exam (or final project). If your syllabus says “Final: 30%”, the weight is 30.
What if the final is the only grade in the course?
If you've completed nothing else, set your current grade to 0 and the final weight to 100. The “needed” grade will equal your target.
Can I aim for a letter grade instead of a percent?
Yes. Type the letter straight into Desired Grade (B+ works). The percent threshold for each letter comes from the Grade Scale dialog, where you can pick your school's scale from 130+ presets or customize the cutoffs.
What does the “What you need for each grade” table show?
For every letter on your scale, the score the final would require to land that overall grade, based on your current grade and the final's weight. “Already secured” means even a 0% keeps you there; “Not possible” means it would take more than 100%.
Can I calculate my grade after taking the final?
Yes. Switch to “After the final” at the top of the calculator, then enter your grade before the final, your final exam score, and the final's weight to see your overall course grade.
My final is worth points, not a percent. What's its weight?
Divide the final's points by the total course points and multiply by 100. A 200-point final in a 1,000-point course has a weight of 20%.
Why does it say “Not possible”?
The score you'd need is above 100%, which isn't possible without extra credit. Try lowering your target or check your weights. Sometimes the final is worth less than you think.
